Accurate foresight is rare, yet Patrick Henry saw the coming conflict with Britain years ahead of his peers. Where did he gain his insight? Mike Smith continues his discussion of Patrick Henry on today's Home School Heartbeat.
Living in Hanover County, Virginia, Patrick Henry was sent to a neighborhood school for several years. He learned to read and write, and made some small progress in arithmetic.
At age 10, his father John Henry brought him home and began to direct his education.
As history has demonstrated, a home education was more than sufficient to give Patrick Henry the tools he needed to argue aggressively for freedom and liberty.
Patrick Henry was always willing to engage in debate and was a supremely confident public speaker. His oratorical skills challenged his peers and his force of character compelled his listeners to consider his views.
Henry was shaping the debate on British rule and firmly arguing the side of freedom and liberty.
John Henry imparted a Christian worldview to his son and Patrick gained a keen grasp of the Bible and Christian principles.
His early training in the Scripture enabled Patrick Henry to easily recognize the tyrannical intrusions of the British crown, and he was determined to make a change in the governing arrangements of the colonies.
And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
