The Myth of Socialization
Volume 50, Program 8

Will homeschooled children be adequately socialized? For an answer to that question please join Mike Smith for today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Smith:
My guest this week is Dr. Brian Ray. Brian, what does your new study—that is, Homeschooling Grows Up-reveal about socialization of homeschool students?

    Dr. Ray:
Well, first of all, they are able to get jobs like most anybody else; perhaps they're able to get them a little more easily. They vote in large numbers. They are participating in civic involvement in other ways, such as donating to political campaigns, donating to political candidates, and those kinds of things. They are going to college-about half of these students were in college. They're responsible citizens who in many ways are like anybody else-that is, they're marrying, they're having children, they're getting paychecks and those kinds of things-but on the other hand, they're very different.

And I think what we see here is that these people probably have experienced many successes. Their life is based on principles and actions, and we see that they're thriving and they're taking on their duties as responsible citizens. The fears of some people that they be socially isolated, taking themselves out of the democratic republic consensus-building process has turned out to be patently false.

    Mike:
So your study indicates that homeschoolers were well-socialized or not well-socialized?

    Dr. Ray:
I would say, based on the facts of this research, they're absolutely very well socialized.

    Mike:
Well, thank you, Brian. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.

Homeschooling Grows Up

by
HSLDA and Dr. Brian Ray

Homeschooling Grows Up is the largest research survey to date of adults who were home educated. Over the last decade, researchers, professionals, parents, the media, and many others have asked repeatedly: How do homeschooled students turn out? Can a homeschool graduate get into college or get a job? How do they fit into society? Are they good citizens? Are they happy?
