Wives, do you ever feel like your husband is speaking to you in a foreign language? Join Michael Farris and Terri Camp as they talk about communicating after the Tower of Babel, today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
Terri, sometimes, even after 32 years of marriage, Vickie and I have a hard time understanding each other. Do you ever experience this, and what do you do about it in your family?

    Terri Camp:
I have something I call at our house, which is No hablo es husbandese, because he talks in a different language than me. And I talk in a different language than him. My language is kind of like this: [brief silence], which is: Know what I want to say, without me having to tell you. Because if he loves me, he would know what I want, right? And he wants to tell me exactly what he wants me to do.

And one time-this is a great illustration-we were sitting on the couch, and we had this huge day planned for the next day, and he was kind of watching something on TV, and I was just sitting next to him and I went, "You know, we have to be at my dad's at 11:00 tomorrow." And he kind of grunted, "Okay," which meant "okay" to me-but he didn't know that that meant he had to be up at 7:30, and help me get the kids bathed, and then I had to make cinnamon rolls and we had to wash the car and all these things that I knew it meant. So at 9:30 he comes down the stairs after being in bed and I'm furious with him because I had all these things I had to do and he didn't help. So that was a huge miscommunication.

So, for me, the most important thing is to not just assume that he knows what I need but to actually tell him.
