"So now you've convinced me and I want to homeschool. What's next?" Listen in as Michael Farris talks with homeschool mom Lisa Whelchel about getting started, today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
Lisa, today's our day to give that final piece of advice to a family that's thinking about homeschooling. What would you tell a family that's just starting out?

    Lisa Whelchel:
Well, the first thing I'd say is spend plenty of time researching, and there's so much available. There are homeschool magazines; there are homeschool books. The Internet is an amazing resource. On my website alone, which is lisawhelchel.com, I have an entire homeschool section where you can link on lots of different places to go for information. From there I would suggest you find a homeschool mom that you can talk to, and take her out to coffee and pick her brain and you'll find out everything you need to know, and perhaps she will even be able to lead you to some other groups where you can find out even more information. The next thing I'd say is call HSLDA and find out about the state laws so that you'll know exactly what you need to do before you begin homeschooling. Then curriculum, learning styles-find out what your kids are like, how they're going to learn best. And then throw everything out the window and listen to your heart, listen to your kids, and listen to the Lord.

    Mike:
Lisa, you've done a terrific job giving the inside perspective on homeschoolers to those who are thinking about entering this wonderful lifestyle. Your book provides real help to those who are asking themselves what God would have them to do. God bless you and your wonderful family. I'm Mike Farris.

Is homeschooling right for you? Lisa's book, So You're Thinking About Homeschooling, offers an honest look at the challenges and rewards. If you'd like to get a copy of her book, just call us toll-free at 866-338-8614. Or visit us online at homeschoolheartbeat.com.
