If I Homeschool, Will My Kids Be Perfect?
Volume 49, Program 2

"All the books I've read make homeschooling sound like the perfect choice for raising perfect kids. Is this really how it works?" Tune in as Michael Farris talks with Lisa Whelchel about what it's really like to homeschool on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:
Lisa, there are a lot of books out on homeschooling now, but sometimes families get overwhelmed by the picture-perfect image they sometimes see. You've recently written So You're Thinking About Homeschooling. What did you hope to accomplish by writing this book?

    Lisa Whelchel:
I hear all the time, when I go out to speak, people that'll come up to me and say, "You know, I'm thinking about homeschooling," but you can hear it in their voice-you know that really what's going on in their mind is, "But I know I could never do it." And I think it's because they have a stereotypical picture in their mind about what a homeschooling family looks like and they think if they don't fit that profile that they can't do it. So I really wanted to show them how homeschooling is inherently flexible and they can make it work for them. That's what homeschooling is all about, making it work for your schedule, making it work for your family, making it work for your goals. Early on, as I mentioned, on kindergarten and 1st grade, just very, very simple-just basic reading and arithmetic. After that I got real hands-on, then we took a trip around America in an RV, and now we're doing computer online homeschooling. So it's been different every year.

    Mike:
Tune in tomorrow for more real-life homeschooling stories with Lisa Whelchel. I'm Mike Farris.
