What do Moses and the first generation of homeschooling parents have in common? Listen as Michael Farris talks about the Moses generation today on Home School Heartbeat.
The book of Exodus opens with the people of Israel groaning under the oppression of Egypt. Scripture tells us that God heard their groans and was concerned for them.
For the past several decades, Christian parents, oppressed by the increasingly anti-Christian bent of most public schools, have longed to be free to train their children to follow God.
Parents, believing God was calling them to homeschool, left the safety of a predictable public classroom for the freedom of home education. Like Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt into the unknown desert, these parents entered uncharted territory.
The perils of that desert remind me of the challenges many of us faced as we started homeschooling in the early 1980's. Like the Israelites, we knew God's law, and wanted to obey it but wondered what dangers might lie ahead. We stepped out relying on God's faithfulness. We read Deuteronomy 6 and wanted to disciple our children like Moses admonished Israel to do. We had visions of generations to come obeying God and seeking to honor Him with their lives. The risk was worth it.
All along the way we've witnessed God's hand of strength guiding, protecting and defending us.
Like the Israelites of old, we need to tell the next generation some of our combat stories, because friends, there are still battles to be fought and won. I'm Mike Farris.
