Like a judge banging a gavel, homeschooling moms look to bring order to their surroundings. Yet kids and clutter don't often "snap to it." Join us as Mike Smith asks author and homeschool mom, Christine Field, for her advice. Mike: Christine, chaos often creeps into homeschool households. How can moms keep it out? Christine: Well you know, a lot of life is maintenance; its dailyness, and as homeschoolers, if we want to keep our sanity, we've got to be organized in that dailyness. But joy often comes from seizing the day. So as moms, sometimes we're walking this tightrope between being orderly and being flexible. Well the balance that we have hit upon is that for routine tasks that don't require a lot of thought, we approach in an organized, maybe even almost rigid manner. But the things that require my heart and my mind, like relationships and communicating with the children and other important lessons, I need to be really flexible about it. Because this frustration caused by being disorganized can be a stumbling block for you as a mom. And it might mean the difference between your survival as a homeschooler or not. So don't confuse orderliness with rigidity. Having a plan is not a prison; it's a lifesaver. It helps our children feel secure; they feel safe and grounded, and they're able to focus on the task at hand. Mike: Well, thank you, Christine. Until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
