Does Dad have any part to play in today's homeschool? President Mike Smith talks about the important role of the homeschooling father today on Home School Heartbeat. Mike: HSLDA recently received a letter from one of our members urging us to talk to fathers about their role in their family's homeschool. And guess what . . . it was a homeschooling dad who wrote that letter! Let's face it, menwe often need a good bit of prodding to get off the recliner, put down the paper, and get involved. Though we succeed in the workplace, at home we relax and trust the job of child training to our wives. But dads, God commands each of us to be the spiritual head of our home. We need to take this job on with gusto! Instead of a list of do's and don'ts, let me encourage you to develop a spiritual vision for your home and your children. God will supply you with all the power you need to lead your family. Think about the things you want your children to learn before they leave home. As top priorities, I wanted my children to be sure of their salvation, to understand God's Word, to be willing to obey God, serve others, and understand the power of prayer. Though our attempts will never be perfect, over time we'll have the privilege of seeing our children meet these goals. Dads, God will reward your efforts. Sit down with your wife and make a list of the spiritual goals you have for your children. You'll be able to aim those arrows of yours at a clear target, and God will insure they hit their mark. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. If you're becoming convinced about the importance of fathers in homeschooling, Michael Farris gives you the keys to success in his book, The Home Schooling Father, available for a minimum donation of $10.
