You know what talents your kids have, but what other factors are involved in helping them choose a vocation? Find out today on Home School Heartbeat with Mike Smith. Mike: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is indeed a good question for young people to consider. Because in addition to talent, a person's desires, dreams, and choices are a function of who he is. According to Gene Edward Veith, "Godmaking use of your family and your culturecreated you as you are." The doctrine of vocation has to do with the mystery of individuality, how God creates each human being to be different from all the rest. Thus a person has particular talents, which he understands are gifts from God. But he also has a personality with likes and dislikes that are particular to him. Like snowflakes, no two vocations are exactly alike. No two people take up exactly the same spot in a family, nation, church, or workplace. So discovering your calling, or finding your vocation, has to do with both determining your God-given talents and investigating your God-given personality. This is not to say that you and your children won't have to make difficult choices, says Veith. There are many agonizing decisions to be made when looking for a vocation. Yet, as Christians, we have the confidence in knowing that our choices are a part of God's ultimate design for our lives. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
