Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a court case? Tune in today as Michael Farris retells one unbelievable scenario on this edition of Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris: In 1987, I flew out to Ohio to defend Robin Diegel against truancy charges. We sat at her picnic table in the backyard and prepared for her day in court. But I also had the privilege of preparing her for her day in the highest court of all. I was able to share the gospel with Robin, and she accepted Christ that very day. I told her I thought God was going to do something powerful in her case, and I believed that He would confirm the faith of this new believer. Now, I was really concerned when we got to court and the judge took the lawyers back into his chambers and said, "Mr. Farris, I've read your brief. It's a good brief, and you can just take this issue on up to the Supreme Court of Ohio, because you're going to lose today." I was dumbfounded that a judge was telling me this before the trial even started! When the superintendent took the stand I took my turn at cross-examining him, and after a few preliminary questions, a stupid question sort of popped into my head. It's objectionable, and I've never asked it before and never asked it since. I said, "Did you get any legal advice before you denied this family the right to homeschool?" He said, "Well, not really, but I talked to some government officials." "Like who?" "Well," he said, "like the judge here, for one." Needless to say, after that was revealed, the judge granted HSLDA's motion for dismissal. Praise God for His sovereign intervention. I'm Mike Farris.
