The National Black Home Educators Resource Association has been assisting African-American homeschoolers for several years now. Co-founder Joyce Burges joins Mike Smith today on Home School Heartbeat to discuss the organization's progress.

    Mike Smith:
Joyce, when we last interviewed you, you and your husband Eric were just getting started with the National Black Home Educators Resource Association. Tell us how have the past two years gone, and what new things do you see on the horizon for the black homeschooling community?

    Joyce Burges:
The past two years have gone tremendously well. God has truly been good to us; we have seen more and more families come out and be a part of the organization. They're actually starting support groups all over the country, so it's really been good. Some of the things I look to in the future are, we're having a symposium this year; in July, we're having our second annual symposium -- that's news -- that's the only one of its kind -- so we're very excited about that. And then we're excited about some of the resources -- the books and the films and the musical masterpieces -- that we display on our website so that families can have a connection to their culture. And then as I get to go and speak all over the country, I see more and more African-Americans coming out and actually wanting to connect with us and start their own support groups, and actually getting started workshops within their own cities to provide more and more information to the African-Americans that are coming up right there in their local areas.

    Mike:
Thank you, Joyce. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.

The growth of homeschooling among African-American families is incredible, and if you'd like more information you can call us toll-free at (866) 338-8614. That's (866) 338-8614.
