You want to help your children develop a closer walk with God-why, have you considered using storytelling as a tool? Mike Smith tells you why storytelling can be so effective in your children's lives on today's Home School Heartbeat. Mike Smith: The benefits of storytelling are many. First and perhaps foremost, you can minister to your children's souls. You can teach them through the characters in your stories that they need a Savior and that a close daily walk with the Lord is important. Second, through stories, parents can teach their children key character qualities and how to develop them in their lives. As most parents know, repetition is essential for children to develop godly character. As your children listen to your stories, they will become more grounded in God's Word. Third, children and parents will grow closer when parents take the time to read to them and tell them the stories. Most parents consider this family time together extremely precious. Fourth, your children gain more knowledge-from how to build a fire to the consequences of disobedience from historical events to Bible principles. Stories are powerful teaching tools. Have you ever noticed how kids often become more focused at night when the lights are dimmed and it's time for bed? This is the best time for storytelling. The distractions of the day are put away and kids become more open with their personal feelings and more willing to speak of spiritual things. Storytelling before bed is a great time for parents to shepherd their children's hearts and draw them to the Lord. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
