Moms, if you're needing a boost, listen today as Chairman Michael Farris talks with his wife, Vickie, about homeschooling their large family next on Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris: Vickie, we have children that are 22 years apart from the oldest to the youngest. Not many moms have children in that big of an age span, but they've got some pretty challenging age spans that they're looking at themselves. What would you suggest when a mom has kids of a lot of different ages? Vickie: It definitely is a challenge. I know some moms with large families on a lot of different age levels like to use unit studies and work with the kids all together where they're all studying the same thing, but then they have some different assignments based on age level. Some people try to group their kids a little bit. We've done that a little bit over the years. I still feel most comfortable using traditional textbooks, and so what I do with our kids, we all meet together in the morning and spend some time together doing devotions and a couple of things. But, basically, I work on them one-on-one. I take them up to my room where my desk is and meet with each one of them, give them their assignments, correct work with them. And it takes a while, it takes the better part of the day to do that, but that has worked well with us over the last 20 years. Mike Farris: Vickie, even I don't understand exactly how you pull off all the things that you have to do, but I know that it's God's strength, and I know that that strength is available for any mom who asks Him. I'm Mike Farris. You've just heard a sneak peak into all the issues that moms deal with in homeschooling their children.
