Academic counseling will be a big part of homeschooling in the future. Mike Smith tells us why on today's Home School Heartbeat. Mike Smith: Someone could make a lot of money off of the experience of veteran homeschool moms. On the other hand, so many of these early moms have served as volunteer "academic counselors" to a number of new homeschoolers who are nervous about the basics. Future academic counseling services for homeschoolers will be of two varieties: professional and volunteer. One group in California has found a good plan for the volunteer kind of academic counseling. Every experienced homeschooling family in the group is asked to volunteer to be a "coach" for a new family. Thus every family who needs help has someone to turn to. And no one family is overburdened with constant calls for assistance. As homeschooling continues to have more and more high school age students, the needs for course specific academic counseling will intensify. It is in this area that professional services will flourish, be they locally operated, phone-based, or even online academies. Mothers who have formal academic experience, as well as homeschooling experience, will be in great demand. Those who have graduated their last child after ten years of homeschooling should look into the business aspect of homeschooling. Another group of likely academic counseling entrepreneurs are recently graduated homeschoolers. Experienced homeschoolers willing to assist both parents and students will add to the success of homeschooling in the future. Until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
