I'm ready to start homeschooling, but I'm not sure where to focus. Chairman Michael Farris talks with his wife Vickie about the essential ingredients for starting your homeschool on today's Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris: Vickie, a lot of moms are listening and saying, "I'm thinking about homeschooling, but how in the world do I get started?"
Vickie: Wow! It's a big job. I would do a lot of praying when you begin. Obviously, you need to choose a curriculum, and we talked about that in the last program. And then, I just think it would be good to talk to other homeschool moms. And maybe you can even find a mom who will let you come in and watch her for a little while. See how she does it, get some ideas, look at some of her books and things that she uses. I think it's a good idea to put together a little schedule for yourself, just to keep you on track, just so you know what you're going to do with your time. A lot of people like to set up a schoolroom, but you don't have to. You can just do it at the kitchen table. And then I would say just do what Psalm 37:5 says: Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. Mike Farris: Vickie, I know that a lot of moms will be encouraged by what you shared with them in the time that we have. There's a lot more involved in getting started, and HSLDA has actually put together a new free how-to-get-started packet, and I know that you'll really be encouraged by it. Should you homeschool your children? That and other questions are answered in a great resource, Home Schooling: Start Here. It's available to you absolutely free when you contact us here at the Home School Legal Defense Association.
