Textbooks? Unschooling? Unit studies? So many choices can be confusing. Listen today as Chairman Michael Farris talks with his wife Vickie about choosing a curriculum, next on Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris: Vickie, when we started homeschooling, a homeschooling curriculum fair could be held in the back seat of our van. Just, there weren't a lot of choices. Today, there are huge convention centers full of curriculum. How would you advise a mom to choose curriculum? Vickie: I think a good place to start is Mary Pride has written a book, I believe she calls it The Complete Guide to Homeschooling. And she critiques all kinds of curriculum in there, so I think that's very helpful. If you know any homeschool moms, I would just go and talk with them, maybe look at some of their materials, see what they do. I think it's a good idea to at least consider you child's learning style and what you think they might respond to. But I think the best rule is one that you made up, Mike, and I know you made it up for me is just to do what's easy on mom. What is it that you feel comfortable with? That's the rule that I've gone by. And we started with A Beka materials and traditional textbooks, and that's what I feel comfortable with, and it's worked well for us. So it's what you feel comfortable with and what you like, I think. Mike Farris: There are homeschooling conferences in every state that have all kinds of curriculum fair materials available for you. That's another good place to look. Thanks for being with us, I'm Mike Farris. If you'd like to hear more from Vickie Farris, then we'd encourage you to get a copy of her book, A Mom Just Like You. We'd be happy to send that out to you for a minimum donation of just $10.00. Call us toll-free at 866-338-8614. |
