Australia has a long history of homeschooling freedom. Christopher Klicka joins Mike Smith on today's Home School Heartbeat to talk about homeschooling in other countries. Mike Smith: Chris, homeschooling has been widely accepted in Australia for years. What is the latest on homeschooling in the land down under? Chris: Homeschooling is doing very well in Australia. Approximately 15,000 families are homeschooling. It's one of the older homeschool movements in the world besides the United States. The Australian Christian Academy homeschooling program has over 1,500 families enrolled with over 3,600 students. The homeschoolers are getting into the universities there and doing very well. They recently had a paper that was produced by one of the major universities that has been used by the homeschoolers to promote homeschooling in an even greater way. However, not everything has been going well. In the state of Queensland, there's been an attempt to require homeschoolers to be certified teachers. The Australian homeschool associations are working together with us to provide information to that state government in order to deter this very real threat. Mike Smith: Thanks, Chris, for that good information on homeschooling in Australia. We'll look forward to your report tomorrow when you tell us homeschoolers in America how we can be of assistance to the homeschoolers oversees.
