You may not realize it, but HSLDA monitors legislation not only in Washington, D.C., but in all 50 states. This week on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith talks about HSLDA's work in the state legislatures. Mike Smith: While our federal government in the United States has great influence over American educational policy, the primary responsibility for creating education law falls to the state governments. Since homeschooling laws also fall under state jurisdiction, HSLDA must watch closely all state legislatures for several reasons. First, we must oppose new laws that might adversely affect the freedom of homeschoolers. Second, we must support legislation that increases the freedom of homeschoolers. For years homeschoolers were on the defensive, merely fighting negative legislation. Now, homeschoolers have the clout to go on the offense. Homeschoolers can get negative laws changed. Third, we want to stay on top of national trends. If more of a certain type of legislation is beginning to pop up across the country, homeschoolers must be ready for it. Good or bad, if we can anticipate the future, we will be better prepared for it. Homeschooling families have such great freedom today, in large part because they paid close attention to legislative issues in their state capitals. We encourage all homeschoolers to get involved in the state political process. We can best protect our freedom by making our voices heard. This week on Home School Heartbeat, I will be discussing several of the legislative issues HSLDA has worked on in recent months. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. |
