As the homeschooling movement matures, more and more homeschool graduates are entering the workforce. Today on Home School Heartbeat Mike Smith discusses concepts that you can include in your curriculum to make your student a more valuable worker. Mike: The best way for your children to learn basic economic and corporate principles would be would be to start a small business that your family runs from home, but a mock business or a computer simulation game may be a helpful secondary option. You might also consider simulating a non-profit corporation that will blend a child's sense of service with learning to run an effective organization. As your child launches his business, real or simulated, engage him in a conversation about his goals and mission. As you know, the bottom line often becomes a focal point in most companies. But your child does not have to fit the mold of corporate greed where the goal is to earn as much money as possible. Discuss with him the benefits of slow growth and setting attainable goals. Help him discover that the most successful business people are those who build their companies slowly instead of following the latest "get rich quick" scheme. This will also lead into an important discussion regarding money and its proper place in our lives. You can challenge your child to be an original thinker and place money as merely one of the many important priorities in his business. And hopefully, he will grow to influence others with his biblical view of money and the workplace. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. How can the Home School Legal Defense Association help you?
