As you prepare your homeschool student for life, it's important to consider the skills that he will need once he enters the working world. Mike Smith provides some ideas on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike:

Homeschooling families can incorporate a number of business ideas into their homeschool curriculum that will serve their children well in their future business endeavors. Regardless of whether or not your child is a budding entrepreneur, having an understanding of general business concepts will make him a valuable team player.

So try including budgeting into your math curriculum. Help your student relate to the idea of creating a very simple budget for himself or by working on the family budget. The only difference between his budget and that of a corporation is the number of line items and the number of dollars. Join him as he practices making accurate projections, being disciplined in following the budget, and keeping an eye on the bottom line.

Another helpful skill for many in the business world is a working knowledge of spreadsheets. An employee who is proficient in this area may find himself promoted quickly so he can assist the company's decision makers. If you're looking for a way to practice spreadsheets with your homeschooler, consider creating a mock business. Numerous computer programs are using entertaining, interactive scenarios that simulate decisions that face business leaders. As your child learns from mistakes that have only mock consequences You may notice him understanding general economic concepts far beyond his years. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.
