Engaging the culture through the political arena
Volume 44, Program 14

How can one Patrick Henry College student impact American culture? Find out as Michael Farris and junior, Katie Jackson, talk about her goals on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike:

Katie, I wanted you to come on the program today to share your vision for what homeschoolers can do in the field of politics. How did you get interested in politics?

    Katie:

It wasn't until I was a senior in high school and had joined a debate team that I actually even thought about politics, but God used that decision to redirect my life and to show me the importance of a public policy maker. Since then, God has placed different political experiences into my lap, but it wasn't until I was a summer intern in Washington, D.C. that I realized the impact a homeschooler could have on the process. As an intern, I was daily confronted with the drastic lack of homeschoolers at the capitol. But also I was confronted with the deep need for interns and leaders with character and academic excellence. From my experience, the political field is very ripe for the homeschool movement

    Mike:

So, Katie, how is Patrick Henry College preparing you to bring God's agenda into the political arena?

    Katie:

My first semester here, it seemed as if a key had been turned on in my brain, and recently through the apprenticeship program I've come to understand what is practically expected on Capitol Hill by debating current issues and writing public policy briefs. But I feel the best asset of PHC is the spiritual side. Because of the academic rigor, I've been forced to rely on Christ in a much deeper way, and I've come to understand that true leadership is not on center stage amidst the applause of the crowd, but behind the scenes in acts of service.
