Since homeschooling is legal in all fifty states, we can sit back and relax. Right? Michael Farris talks about the challenges facing the next generation today on Home School Heartbeat. Mike: When we started homeschooling over 20 years ago, many families had to fight to legally educate their own children. Michigan residents, Mark and Chris DeJonge, spent eight years fighting a criminal truancy charge for homeschooling because they weren't certified teachers. But in 1993 the DeJonge's won their case before the Michigan Supreme Court. Battles will continue to crop up over compulsory attendance laws, testing, record keeping, and curriculum. But through the efforts of many dedicated people, homeschooling is now a well-established, legal option for parents throughout the nation. So what's next? Challenges which directly affecting homeschooling will continue to arise. I believe that God has greater battles in mind for what I call the Joshua generation of homeschoolers. We are still on the other side of the Jordan and there are giants in the land. Abortion, homosexual marriage, degradation in art, music and cinema are giants we face today. The homeschooling movement will be truly successful when one of our young heroes takes five smooth stones in some political or legal forum and brings down these giants for good. That is a big vision and a mighty big battle. Tune in tomorrow to see what one Patrick Henry College student plans to do about it. I'm Mike Farris.
