Are you interested in exploring the west along with Lewis and Clark? Then join Chairman Michael Farris as he shares resources and ideas today on Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris: The Lewis and Clark Expedition bicentennial has sparked a wealth of activity and research, which will benefit homeschoolers tremendously. Many groups are planning events during 2003-2006, to commemorate the amazing accomplishments of this team of explorers. As homeschoolers, we have the flexibility to take advantage of many of these opportunities. I'm excited that the celebration begins just about 100 miles away from my home in Loudoun County, Virginia. On the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's secret letter to Congress requesting funds for the trip, January 18, 2003, Charlottesville, Virginia will host this kick off event. In addition, resources are available for families interested in studying the journey from home. The National Park Service has developed curriculum for students from Kindergarten to 7th grade. Take the trip with Lewis's pet dog; you can also read the story of Clark's slave, York, and his contribution to the journey; research the amazing animals of the west, the great grizzly bear, buffalo and pronghorn. Meet the members of the Core of Discovery, the men who accompanied Lewis and Clark. Read about the medicines used along the trail, practice mapping skills. Don't miss this opportunity to enliven your homeschool and take advantage of a unique moment in history. I'm Mike Farris.
