Are you looking for a living history topic to liven up your homeschool? Chairman Michael Farris talks about using the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial celebration as a springboard, today on Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris: The bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition offers homeschoolers a terrific opportunity to share in what many believe is the greatest example of American exploration. Resources abound to promote this monumental occasion, and beginning in January 2003 events will be held along the trail to provide great hands on learning experiences. Every step of the way, starting with Thomas Jefferson's vision of expansion, through the gathering of the expedition team called the Core of Discovery, to the building of the keelboats, the meeting of Sacagawea, and the voluminous journals kept by both Lewis and Clark, you'll find unlimited topics to explore. Studying history sparks the imagination. Think back to 1801. The map of our nation extended only to the Appalachian Mountain range, with territories west to the Mississippi River. We were a small, young nation, and not everyone agreed that expansion was prudent or even constitutional. Thankfully, Jefferson, the visionary, was not dissuaded by the misgivings of his fellow countrymen. His foresight allowed our nation to stretch from sea to sea. I think that there is real opportunity to use the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition to get your kids excited about our great heritage. I'm Mike Farris.
