Moms are you worried about teaching calculus or advanced science? Michael Smith talks with his wife, Elizabeth, a veteran homeschooling mother, about her experience homeschooling through high school on today's Home School Heartbeat.

Mike Smith:


You've successfully seen our children graduate from our homeschool and then from college. What advice do you have for mothers who may be worrying about how to teach complex high school subjects?


Elizabeth:


Well, many homeschoolers don't continue during the high school years because they're afraid they can't prepare their children for college. And so I wanted to just encourage parents to know you can't do it all and you shouldn't try. Let me just remind you of one of my husband's favorite sayings, and that is: In the homeschooling years God fills in the gaps. But when our children did start the community college system they found that they brought with them work habits that made them successful students. And it wasn't all the things I taught but there were three aspects of the things we learned in homeschooling that made them successful in college. First they attended class regularly. They found many students pay and don't even go to their classes. Then they did their assignments on time and that was unusual too. Most students don't. And finally they always studied for exams because in our homeschool program we enforced these study habits so that our children would be able to apply methods of study that would help them be successful later on.
