What kind of preparation to do before a curriculum fair
Listen Now
Volume 43, Program 17
2/25/2003

You're getting ready to attend your state's convention. How can you make the curriculum hall work for you? Beverly McCord, founder of one of the oldest and largest curriculum fairs in the United States, joins President Michael Smith on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Michael Smith:

Beverly, with your 18 years of experience coordinating the Home School Book Fair in Arlington, Texas, what kind of preparation do you recommend people do before going to the curriculum fair?

    Beverly McCord:

Well, Mike, you really have to educate yourself on the materials for homeschoolers before you show up. You have got to go to the Internet and study their websites. Get their catalog. Talk with your homeschool friends. Get their recommendations. Really get informed. Now that you've got that done then you really need to make up a shopping list. I find it really helpful to have one part that has all the books I know I'm going to buy and the second part is the books I'm thinking about buying but I'm not really sure about. What I like to do is copy these on heavy cardstock, punch a hole in it, run a long string through it, and hang it around my neck when I go to the curriculum fair. This way I won't leave my shopping list at somebody's booth and spend half the day hunting for it. And then last, it's really important to take a sturdy canvas bag to carry all these books around in because you do wind up buying quite a bit.
