What unique role can dad play in a homeschool? President Mike Smith encourages dads to teach kids to work on this edition of Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike:

Homeschooling moms across the country have asked me to encourage their husbands to get involved in the homeschooling process. And a lot of dads have jumped in enthusiastically.

Dads with flexible work schedules are helping in all aspects of homeschooling. But the demands of a busy career keep many fathers away from the home during the school day. With creativity, dads can still play a vital role in home education.

One thing every dad can do is help to prepare his children for adulthood. Children were not meant to live indefinitely with their parents and need to learn how to provide for themselves. Jesus learned carpentry from His earthly father, and James and John were working in their father's fishing business when Jesus called them to follow Him.

I've worked with a number of people over the years and have come to appreciate several qualities that make a good employee. Employers want workers who will respect the chain of command and cheerfully receive a directive as an order. A good employee looks for things that need to be done and helps without being told. Excellence is the only standard a good employee seeks to meet. Finally, a good employee works hard, doing whatever it takes to get the job done well.

Fathers can do a lot to build a strong work ethic in their kids. To prepare your children for future employment, teach them to respect authority, take initiative, strive for excellence, and work hard. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.

If you're becoming convinced about the importance of fathers in homeschooling, Michael Farris gives you the keys to success in his book, The Home Schooling Father, available for a minimum donation of $10. Call us toll-free at 866-338-8614. That's 866-338-8614.
