How has homeschooling changed over the years? Hear from a homeschooling leader who's been in the trenches as she talks with Mike Smith today on Home School Heartbeat. Mike: Zan, homeschoolers in South Carolina are indebted to you for your efforts to establish the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools or SCAIHS as a legal, alternate source of approval. Take us back to that struggle if you will. Zan: Well, Mike, from the time we started homeschooling, as you well know we were threatened with jail in 1984 and from that time until 1992 my children and I lived either in the courtroom or in the legislature. And as we worked through all the problems and saw God's great merciful and providential hand in solving all these things. I worried that the boys' education was really going to be compromised. It has been such a blessing to me to see them both as young adults very politically involved in what's going on in the state of South Carolina. And as God always does, He takes those things where we're the weakest and feel the least equipped, and He turns them into the greatest blessings of our lives. Mike: What's on your horizon now as your homeschooling years draw to a close? Zan: Well, Mike, I'm getting ready to start on a new venture now. I will be involved in a homeschooling product development and curriculum development for Broadman and Holman Publishers. I hope this will really be the avenue that God opens up for me to be able to encourage young women to love their children and their husbands and serve them by homeschooling.
