Do you know why a classical liberal arts curriculum is valuable for high school and college students? Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Farris talks about classical liberal arts. Mike: Joining us today is Dr. Marian Sanders, Chairman of the Patrick Henry College Department of Classical Liberal Arts. Marian, can you tell us, what is a classical liberal arts curriculum? Marian: A classical liberal arts curriculum is a core curriculum designed to include a whole series of things from biblical studies to rhetoric to logic to classical languages, history, literature, English composition, mathematics, and the sciences. Mike: Kind of sounds like Harvard 200 years ago. Marian: That's exactly right because for so many years most colleges employed a core curriculum which all of the students took and it didn't matter what field of study you planned to go into; you studied all of these various areas. And that disappeared really in the beginning of the 1960's. But this is a very important basic. It is a foundation for any kind of study that you want to do. You need to have an understanding of this because this is the center of our western heritage. It tells us something about how we reason, how we think, ethics, philosophy, esthetics, history, and all of this can be certainly defined in a core curriculum that is centered on the study of history and languages and rhetoric and so forth.
