Do you wonder if your high schooler is ready for college work? Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Farris talks about how parents can know when to start college work with their high schoolers. Mike: Joining us again today is Dr. Paul Bonicelli, who's the Academic Dean for Patrick Henry College. Paul, how does a parent and a student know if they are ready to have the student launch into college work? Paul: Well, of course, parents are the best judge of that, and the ones that we run into as we go through our admissions process are looking at their student in terms of being ready for the next level. If they've done a general history study they're ready for more advanced history studies or specialized history studies. The same with theology, English, writing, those kinds of things. Mike: Often times in my experiences both as a parent and as a friend of thousands of homeschoolers, math and science is an area of particular challenge, and they look for help in the advanced levels in calculus, and physics, and so on. Also languages are another area where families often need some help and homeschooling parents can often find a way to fill in some of the gaps that they have in their own preparation with college courses as a supplement. Paul: Absolutely. A good example of that would be Constitutional Law. It's an attractive course for a lot of the students who come to Patrick Henry College. It's a way to continue studies in American government at the college level that they've already begun at home with their parents.
