Would you like your child to be able to defend godly principles with clarity and eloquence? Chairman Michael Farris talks about a great tool to get them started today on Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike:

Participation in formal debate is a great way to improve your child's reasoning powers, clarity of thinking, and ability to stand for the truth of God's word.

That's why, in 1996, HSLDA established a National Debate tournament specifically for homeschoolers. That original vision has grown into the National Christian Forensics & Communication Association, an independent organization.

NCFCA gives homeschoolers training by those with extensive forensic experience and the opportunity for competition. NCFCA now sponsors the National Home School and Debate Tournament.

Team cross-examination debate, Lincoln-Douglas one-on-one debates, and a variety of individual speech events are all available to qualifying candidates.

The use of lay judges allows parents and community members to get involved. NCFCA's focus on a style of argumentation resembling a typical public forum, like a court or public hearing, prepares students for making their case in a manner that's easily understood by the general public.

NCFCA's goal is to help homeschoolers address life's issues biblically, with God's glory, not their own, as the focus. Visit our HSLDA website to be able to link to NCFCA to find out how to get your students involved in debate. I'm Mike Farris.

Debate is a time-tested and proven method of teaching our children some critical life skills in the areas of communication and persuasiveness, as well as giving them some important public speaking skills. We'd love to put some information into your hands to help your homeschooler get involved in debate. Call us toll-free at 866-338-8614. Or go to our website at homeschoolheartbeat.com.

Debate? How does learning that skill have any real-life application?

If you've ever asked that question, you need a copy of Debate: An Introduction. In addition to explaining how we use (or misuse) debate skills in our everyday interactions, this free, 4-page brochure also provides information on getting involved in homeschool debate and profiles some helpful debate resources.
