How can I teach high level math when I'm not confident about my own math skills? Hear one mothers' story as she talks with Michael Farris today on Home School Heartbeat. Mike: We're talking again today with Vicky Kaseorg, who's a homeschooling mother of three from North Carolina. Her son, Anders, has won very high recognition at international math competitions. Vicky, did you have a particularly strong math background yourself? Vicky: No, not at all, but I just kind of knew what resources to throw at my son. But really stopped teaching him math by about age of 5 or 6. He had taken off on his own at that point. Mike: Do you have any encouragement for other homeschooling moms who might feel a little insecure about teaching math? Vicky: I sure do. I certainly was no math whiz myself, and there are just so many people out there that are willing to help me, and I discovered that there are so many resources just even in the public library that can help a parent in trying to teach math to their child. My son found the "Easy Way" books, the first one he found was "Algebra the easy way" in the public library. And that's what started him on this amazing math journey. So I would say find people that have gone before you and ask them lots of questions cause most homeschoolers are so willing to help; and then just trust your child and God to help point the way towards the proper resources.
