Is your bright child bored in school? Hear one mother's story of how homeschooling helped as she talks with Michael Farris on today's Home School Heartbeat. Mike: Our guest today is Vicky Kaseorg, homeschooling mother of three. She's the mother of the 2002 International Math Olympiad silver medallist, Anders Kaseorg. Vicky, tell our listeners the story of your son Anders and the role you played in facilitating his accomplishments in mathematics. Vicky: Well, Anders went to public kindergarten, and from a very early age we knew that he had some pretty extraordinary gifts in both reading and math. He was already reading at a twelfth grade level in kindergarten and doing multiplication and even beginning algebra by age 5. And they tested him themselves and agreed with me at the level of his performance was quite high, but told me that first grade was an absolutely essential grade, and so they refused to accelerate him. And I worked my way up to the assistant superintendent, who told me, "You know, the public schools can't educate everyone, and I'd really consider looking into homeschool if I were you." And when I began to explore it, I thought it was a bunch of fringe lunatics but quickly discovered it to be just a wonderful, educational alternative for us. But also just the spiritual and social benefits to our family, we had never anticipated, and we just have continued homeschooling from that first day without looking back.
