As our culture changes, society will face new problems and issues. Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA president Mike Smith asks, "Will the next generation be ready?" Mike Smith: Twenty-five years ago do you think most people had ever dreamed of anything so remarkable as the Internet? It was clearly the stuff of science fiction. Yet a few people must have, because by the end of the 20th century, most people in our society had this amazing tool in their homes, changing their lives forever. It's incredible how quickly a new idea or invention can change society. It is frightening to think that our abilities to do amazing things are changing faster than our moral capacity to deal with their implications on our culture. We can look at any number of fields and see staggering advances in recent years. Yet as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. Will we use this power for good or evil? If our society does not believe that good and evil truly exist, how will it handle its newfound abilities? Certainly not for God's glory. That's where Christians come in. Christians must apply their biblical worldview to all of these fields of study. This will be increasingly difficult as society continues to change, yet increasing vital. Homeschoolers are in a unique position to confront these issues for Christ. Will they be ready? I hope so. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith. How can we help our children to be a positive influence on our culture? We've put together a free sheet that suggests books and other resources to help you prepare your children to engage their culture. When you contact us, just ask for Home Schoolers Engaging Their Culture, a great free resource. Call us toll-free at 866-338-8614. Or, go to our website at homeschoolheartbeat.com. |
