If you've heard our culture described as "post-modern" but find yourself wondering exactly what that means, you're not alone. Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA president Mike Smith explains what post-modernists believe and what that means for you.

    Mike Smith:

Many philosophers and theologians refer to the age in which we live as "post-modern." But what does that mean?

Sometimes it's easier to define something by explaining what it's not. In generations past, we could say that no matter how people disagreed about what was true, people could agree that ultimate truth existed.

    Not so any more.

Postmodernism rejects any belief in a universal truth. To the typical member of a postmodern society, all ideas are equally valid. Thus in our culture today we see prevalence of an idea that any individual can believe whatever he wants, as long as he doesn't try to "force" his ideas on anyone else.

Perhaps you've tried to share an idea or principle from the Bible with a non-Christian friend only to be met with the response, "That's fine if it works for you, but I see things differently." This friend is not only rejecting the truth of scripture, but he's rejecting that truth exists at all.

This should be troubling to Christians. Yet this is the viewpoint that pervades the society your children are growing up in. Will they be ready to combat this way of thinking? Next time we will discuss how you can prepare your children to do just that. And until then, I'm Mike Smith.

We've put together a free sheet that suggests books and other resources to help you prepare your children to engage their culture.
