Parents with a special needs child often find that the home school setting is just the environment their child needs to learn! Michael Smith talks with Chuck Hurst about the Home School Foundation's Special Needs Children's Fund on today's Home School Heartbeat. Michael Smith: Chuck, a group of families very dear to us at HSLDA are those with special needs children. Can you tell our listeners what the Home School Foundation is doing to help these families? Chuck Hurst: Sure. I'll do so with a story. When Danny was eight years old, Bob and Joyce decided to do what they'd be yearning to do. And that was to step out and teach him at home. It wasn't an easy decision for them because Danny had special learning needs and really needed help. Yet each day when he returned from school he seemed to be withdrawing from them further and further. They knew something had to be done. That something they concluded was to begin home schooling. They knew he needed speech and occupational therapy but to keep him withdrawing they didn't want to send him back into the school. So they had to bear the expense themselves and it was no small expense. These therapies can run over a $1,000 a month. That's exactly what the Children's Special Needs Fund was set up to help. Our motivation for this fund came from Jesus who said let the little children come to me and do not hinder them. Through this fund we partner with parents to show the heart and hands of God. They show his heart by giving their love and attention. We show his hands by helping them to meet their financial needs. Homeschooling a special needs child presents additional obstacles and opportunities. We have several valuable resources, and can you send you out a helpful packet absolutely free.
