As the home school movement matures, families are doing more and more creative things to increase opportunities and enhance the educational experience for home schoolers. Today on Home School Heartbeat, Michael Smith, talks with Margie Haley about the drama group she helped found. Listen and you might get some good ideas about things your group can do. Michael Smith: Margie, I hear great things about your drama group called, "Once Upon An Act Home School Drama Club." Please tell our listeners about some of the things you've done and why you wanted to develop this group. Margie Haley: Well, it all started about nine years ago with an old book of one act we found in an antique store. They were cheesy but they were fun. Our teenage daughters had never been in a high school play like I had. So we got together with some of our other home school friends. We used the church and performed for just the moms and dads. Since then we've gotten a lot more ambitious as the other parents caught the vision of what we could do in drama. And they added their talents to the mix. Set construction, costuming, lighting, sound and makeup. We've produced 10 plays since then. We sold tickets to the public and carefully budgeted our resources. Some years we focus on technique with the drama class and the home school co-op. One year a senior directed our plays as a class project. Some of the biggest benefits for home schoolers are the teamwork and skill trading. Our families have really stretched themselves. And I just love them all. Many of our graduates now excel in college, church or civic theater. Michael Smith: That's great, Margie! Listeners, there's no limit to the creative things home schoolers can do as part of their educational experience. All week we'll be highlighting some of the successful programs going on out there.
