Academic Coercion vs. Freedom to Teach the Truth

Can teaching creationism cost a Christian college its accreditation? Mike Farris describes the battle that Patrick Henry College is fighting on today's Home School Heartbeat.

    Mike Farris:

The American Academy for Liberal Education has denied accreditation to Patrick Henry College solely because we teach creationism.

We have appealed and intend to put on a vigorous fight. But why has the AALE done this?

They claim that requiring our faculty to teach creationism is a denial of academic freedom. But it's plain they will not be happy unless we mandate that evolution is taught in the science courses.

This is not about academic freedom but about coercion. Our biology professorwho has recently earned a Ph.D. in that field from the University of Virginiabelieves that God created the world in six literal days. They do not want to give her the academic freedom to teach that viewthey want her to march to the beat of their ideological drum.

A Mormon college has recently been accredited by the AALE even though they mandate their professors and students to never disagree with the teachings of the LDS church.

Why are Mormon restrictions on academic freedom acceptable to the AALE while evangelical Christian restrictions are not?

There is only one answer. The AALE discriminates against those who take Genesis 1 seriously and teach it as the truth.

Patrick Henry College will not succumb to their attempts at academic coercion. We want the freedom to teach the truth.
