Will home schooled graduates be equipped with the skills they need to function in society? Join us on Home School Heartbeat as Michael Farris, president of Home School Legal Defense Association, shares the results of some interesting research on home educated adults. Mike: A recent study by Dr. Gary Knowles, Assistant Professor of Education at the University of Michigan, confirms what home schooling parents have known for years. Teaching children at home wont make them social misfits. Listen to what he discovered. First, none of the home educated adults he surveyed was unemployed or on welfare. Second, more than three-quarters felt that being taught at home actually helped them to interact with people from different levels of society. Third, more than 40 percent attended college, and 15 percent of those had completed a graduate degree. Fourth, nearly two-thirds were self-employed. And finally, 96 percent said they would want to be taught at home again. Knowles reported that they had many warm memories about their home schooling. Many mentioned the strong relationship it engendered with their parents, while others talked about the self-directed curriculum and individualized pace that a flexible program of home schooling permitted. Yes, home schooling is a valid educational option, and socialization should not be an issue. After all, evidence of proper socialization is self-confidence. How better to foster self-confidence than through the atmosphere of a loving home and the dedication of parents who are willing to invest their lives in their children. Im Michael Farris.
