Members of the United States military sacrifice many things to protect our liberties—but giving their children a good education shouldn’t have to be one of those sacrifices. Today on Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith introduces a new way to support homeschooling families in the military. Mike Smith: This year, we’ve started a new fund: our Military Fund. We have been hearing from an increasing number of homeschooling families in the military. Heather, a military homeschool mom, explained to us that ironically, when her husband is home, their finances are tightest. When he is deployed, they get hazardous duty pay and family separation pay. But when he returns, they struggle sometimes even to put food on the table. In the midst of a challenging life, homeschooling can be a great blessing for military families. Evelyn, a homeschooling mom, recounts that their children’s first school was great. But when they were deployed to Germany, the school on base was drastically different. The academic levels were far behind what her children were used to, and boredom was leading to behavioral issues. Evelyn and her husband decided to homeschool rather than taking chances on what schools they might encounter in their moves. She told us, “Our life is so much better with homeschooling. This way we can keep it consistent with the same curriculum, and they don’t miss out on anything.” Join us next time to hear more from homeschooling families in the military. And until then, I’m Mike Smith. |
