Homeschool dads, are you looking for some ways to strengthen family unity? Today on Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith, homeschool dad Kevin Swanson talks about one important practice.

“Your Turn, Dad” @home e-vent package

In this package, six different dads from different stages in life chime in with their lessons on fatherhood. In these encouraging webinars, they cover everything from having a “presence in your absence” to being a dad who is “fully there”—how to engage your children, teach them, and help your wife from shouldering all the burden of both home and school. Want to get some tips on managing work and family? Find encouragement in raising up godly children? You’ll find it all here.

Mike Smith:
Kevin, as we lead up to Father’s Day this week, we’ve seen how spending time homeschooling your son really impacted your relationship. Let’s wrap up this week with something that is important to the whole family, however. Would you please share with us how the practice of leading regular devotions changed your family’s life?

Kevin Swanson:
Well, Mike, you know, I found that the Bible is the core curriculum. Deuteronomy 6:7 says “Teach your children God’s Word as you sit in the house, as you walk by the way.” That’s what God wants us teaching, and it’s got to be regular! Hebrews 3:13 says “Exhort one another every day, as long as it is called day, lest any be hardened with the deceitfulness of sin.” I just find that our children’s hearts get hardened unless the Word of God is being shared every single day.

And so my encouragement is read the Bible to your children, and bring applications. And you know, “Go to the Ant, you sluggard, and consider her ways and be wise.” Talk about slothfulness in the home. Talk about how ants don’t need to be told when to do their geography. Talk about how important it is to be diligent as a household.

And then you get down on your knees together and just ask the Lord to help you in these areas that are really hard—these character development areas. And I find that as we do these sorts of things, God transforms our families.

Mike:
Kevin, thanks for your wise testimony you brought us this week! Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
