Home School Legal Defense Association looks for excellent attorneys who also have a heart for homeschooling. Today on Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Farris, get to know Peter Kamakawiwoole, a homeschool graduate and HSLDA’s newest lawyer.

Mike Farris:
My guest today is Peter Kamakawiwoole, who is one of my former students at Patrick Henry College, a recent law school grad, and now my coworker. Peter, please tell our listeners about yourself and your family, and how you come to be here at HSLDA.

Peter Kamakawiwoole:
Well, I’m the oldest of five children. We were all homeschooled from kindergarten through high school. I was raised in Hawaii, but I knew that I wanted an education that would both strengthen my faith and also prepare me to be an effective advocate. There’s not really much there in Hawaii, but once I knew that’s what I wanted, it was an easy choice to come to Patrick Henry College. It actually also turned out to be the right choice because that’s where I met my wife, Corrie. We’ve been married for three and a half years, we have one son who is 16 months old and we’re expecting twins.

I studied law school in St. Louis, but as I wrapped up school I knew that because we had a family, we wanted to be close to other family members, or at least a network of other likeminded family who would share our beliefs and values in the importance of homeschooling. And so, when this position opened here at HSLDA, we really got the best of both worlds. My brothers are still very close—they live in the area. And I not only get to know, but work with a fantastic group of co-laborers who are first and foremost loving husbands, wives, and parents.

Mike Farris:
Thanks, Peter. Good to have you here. I’m Mike Farris.
