Peter Kamawiwoole grew up a homeschooler in Hawaii. Now he’s a graduate of law school and the newest HSLDA lawyer. Today on Home School Heartbeat, Peter shares about his homeschool experience with host Mike Farris.

Mike Farris:
When we recruit new lawyers for Home School Legal Defense Association, we have to look not only for excellent attorneys but for ones who have a heart for homeschooling. Joining us today is HSLDA’s newest lawyer, Peter Kamakawiwoole. Peter, welcome to Home School Heartbeat and to HSLDA.

Peter Kamakawiwoole:
Thanks so much for having me. I’m thrilled to be here.

Mike Farris:
Peter, tell us a little about your own homeschooling background—where did you grow up, and what did homeschooling look like for your family?

Peter Kamakawiwoole:
Well, I was born in a Massachusetts snow storm but raised in balmy Hawaii. My parents are actually still there; they serve on the state homeschool board—Christian Homeschoolers of Hawaii.

I’m the oldest of five children, we were all homeschooled grades K–12 with the exception of my youngest sister who’s only made it to 10. My mom was trained as a teacher so we didn’t follow a set curriculum. She really wanted to build our homeschool program around our interests and skills. So, for me, I had a focus on history, on literature—as I got into high school, on competitive speech and debate, and then extensive reading and writing for a worldview curriculum that we did. All that really preparing me for the classical liberal arts education that I’d receive at Patrick Henry College.

Mike Farris:
Thanks, Peter. It’s great to have you on the team. I’m Mike Farris.
