Intimate Companionship: C.S. Lewis and Joy Davidman Gresham volume 110, Program 15 2/17/2012
C.S. Lewis is probably already on most homeschoolers’ reading lists. But this Valentine’s Day week, host Mike Smith and our guest, Dr. Gene Veith, take a lesson on love from his life. Join us today on Home School Heartbeat.
Family Vocation: God’s Calling in Marriage, Parenting, and Childhood
What does it mean to be called as a husband, a wife, a parent, a child? How does the grace of the gospel impact how we carry out our particular calling? How does God’s presence influence the struggles that families face? Dr. Veith explores these and other questions in his most recent book. Learn more or order today.
Mike Smith:
Dr. Veith, C.S. Lewis is one of the Christian writers who really stands out, even in the secular world today. But a lot of people don’t know about his own love story with his wife Joy Davidman Gresham. What is it about this real life love story that makes it worth studying?
Dr. Gene Veith:
Lewis was 59 when he met Joy Davidman Gresham. She was 42, and she had become a Christian through reading Lewis’s works, and eventually they formed a really strong friendship. Then she got cancer, and then as she was dying on her deathbed they had a real church wedding. But then she was healed, and Lewis believed it was a miraculous healing; she went into remission of cancer very dramatically. So, for four years they actually were able to live as husband and wife, and in a very close and strong love. Then the cancer came back and she died. Then Lewis wrote a very powerful book called, A Grief Observed, about his struggles with coming to terms with her death which he finally did in understanding the greater love of God.
Mike:
