Almost 250 years after the founding of our nation, we are battling to protect many original freedoms given by the U.S. Constitution. With this in mind, Home School Heartbeat host Mike Farris designed a DVD series titled “Constitutional Literacy.” Today he shares the first thing you should know when studying the Constitution.

Mike Farris:
After practicing Constitutional law for about 35 years and teaching the subject on the collegiate level for a decade, I’ve come to strongly believe that in order to remain a free people, American citizens must understand the role of the Constitution. This week I’ll be discussing why this is important for you as a parent, as well as for your children.

The Founders required our leaders to promise to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. But it is not a document that was written in the name of the leaders, but by the authority of “We the People.” It was expected, from the very beginning of our nation, that the people themselves would effectively enforce the sworn duty of every leader to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.

For years, Americans have remained silent as our government encroaches on our freedoms. If our government no longer faithfully adheres to the Constitution, ultimately the problem is that we’re not doing our part as enlightened citizens. To change this, we need to know what the text of the Constitution’s text requires. We also need to know what our government is doing today. It is our duty as citizens faithful to the Constitution, to keep our officials accountable to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

I’m Mike Farris.
