Raising children means different challenges with each child. And if your household ranges from lions to golden retrievers, those differences could be pretty dramatic! Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith hosts John Trent as he discusses how to best parent the unique personalities of your children.

Mike Smith:
Today, we’re wrapping up this week’s program with John Trent, author, and speaker, and founder of StrongFamilies.com, a ministry devoted to strengthening the families. John, would you summarize what the biggest challenge in parenting each personality type is?
John Trent:
Well, you know, I think in some cases, surprisingly, it’s when you get that kid that’s really a mix or a mutt! They’re a lion and an otter and a golden retriever and a beaver, you know! God gives us all kind of strengths and we’re not trying to pigeonhole anybody, but I think it is helpful for parents to just understand these general characteristics. And, boy, you’ve got a lion-beaver that means there’s a right way and it’s my way! You know, if you’ve got a golden retriever that’s real sensitive but they’ve got a lot of detail strengths too, well that helps you know, boy they’re sensitive, but they really want to do things right. So just becoming a student of your spouse and becoming a student in their personality, becoming a student of your kid can be a tremendously helpful way for you to build a strong family.
Mike:
John, this is very helpful. Thank you so much for joining us this week; we’ve been very blessed by your wisdom. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
