How do you keep homeschooling during times of transition? Today on Home School Heartbeat, a mom of 10 joins host Mike Smith with insights from her family’s experience with adopting 6 children.

Mike Smith:
Mary Ostyn joins us once again to talk about homeschooling and adoption. Mary, with the amount of time and energy required to help a newly adopted child adjust and bond, how do you keep homeschooling going for the rest of your children?

Mary Ostyn:
Anytime a new child enters the family, whether it’s by birth or adoption, parents are wise to expect some adjustment time. For at least six months, I’d encourage you to constantly lower your expectations. I’m not talking about principles here, I’m talking about shortening your to-do list. Focus on the essentials—reading, math, and relationships, with just enough housework thrown in there to keep everyone clothed and fed.

With 10 kids, I’ve had a lot of nights when I’ve gone to bed feeling I hadn’t done enough, wondering if my children were learning enough. But remember, we serve the God of the loaves and fishes, the God who can multiply small offerings. Our effort may not feel like enough, but God’s “enough” is amazing. He’s able to accomplish His will in our children’s lives, even during years when our to-do list needs to be very short.

Mike:
Well Mary, thank you so very much for sharing your family’s experience with our listeners this week. And I know many will be inspired by your family’s story. I know I was. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
