It’s the perennial question asked of homeschoolers: what about socialization? One homeschooled high schooler shares her response to that issue, today on Home School Heartbeat with Mike Farris and guest Lydia Ware.

Mike Farris:
I got a really encouraging letter some time ago from a young lady named Lydia Ware, and she detailed several ways she’s seen homeschooling impact her life. It’s been my privilege this week to have her share encouragement with you. Lydia, as a homeschooled student, what’s your perspective on this famous question: “What about socialization?”

Lydia Ware:
Mr. Farris, being homeschooled has been great at getting me out there, not among just kids my own age, but participating in community clubs, going to dances, and especially when going to work with Dad, occasionally, meeting adults and businesspeople. I find it so fun when you can look them confidently in the eye, grab their hand firmly, and introduce yourself without hesitation. And they look at you and say, “You’re homeschooled, aren’t you?”

I wish I could show everybody how many benefits there are to being homeschooled: how much more closely knit a family can be, when you have the time it takes to bond with your family members; how much more prepared for life you can be, having been around the real thing to teach you; how much stronger a person you can become, if you have the chance to build your character without the constant push of peer pressure. The most amazing gift my mom and dad could have given me was to teach me at home.

Mike:
Lydia, thank you so very much—you’re really an encouragement! I’m Mike Farris.
