How you can instill empathy and leadership characteristics in your kids? On today’s Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith and Kurt Dahlin, founder of Water Wells for Africa, discuss how to prepare your children to personally and tangibly demonstrate compassion.

Mike Smith:
Kurt, what advice would you give to homeschool parents who want to help their children grow and develop in maturity, empathy, and servant leadership? How can parents prepare their children to make the most of opportunities to help the needy?

Kurt Dahlin:
Parents prepare children to make the most of opportunities by creating and taking advantage of opportunities to care. Compassion is birthed in situations that demand compassion. You can’t legislate compassion, Mike. You must lead compassion. When I saw the struggle for water that African women and children face every day, I was compelled to help.

We’ve now installed about 130 boreholes that help 250,000 people every day have clean water. It wasn’t until I went and personally experienced the need, that I was moved by compassion. Of course, my kids want to go with me. Then they catch their own vision. I’ve taken hundreds of people on their first mission trip, and it has led to many continuing to serve locally and globally in works of mercy.

Mike:
Kurt, it’s been a blessing to talk with you this week and to hear about the great work you’re doing. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
