Do you sometimes wonder if homeschooling is really preparing your children to make a positive impact on our world? On this edition of Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith speaks with homeschooling dad Kurt Dahlin about why your child might be particularly well-equipped for global missions.

Mike Smith:
Kurt, we’ve been discussing your family’s involvement in Water Wells for Africa. How can homeschooling be a great springboard to do this kind of work?

Kurt Dahlin:
Well Mike, homeschoolers have the opportunity to study outside the box. The creative nature of homeschooling, coupled with Christian compassion, can add up to doing many great things in our stewardship of the planet. We’re free to direct study and curriculum. That includes works of compassion. Missions should not just be a thing of the past, a study of history. Instead, we should learn from the heroes of the past and chart our own future—make your own history.

Start small. Find a humanitarian agency or mission that you can support in prayer. Do something to raise awareness. Fundraise. Be a part of making good things happen. More importantly, go on a mission trip. It will challenge your faith; it will challenge your selfishness—and it can awaken compassion and calling to destiny. Homeschoolers should be at the forefront of positive social change, community development, and relieving suffering in the hurting parts of God’s world.

Mike:

Kurt, that’s very encouraging, and a great reminder that we need to be stewards of the opportunities we have to train up our children. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
